The Danish Minister for Immigration and Integration vows to dismantle radical Islamism, violence, and threats related to honor: “destructive to our residential areas.”
The Danish Ministry of Immigration and Integration published a statement this morning which included the following, in addition to statements by the Danish Minister of Immigration and Integration, Morten Bodskov:
A new scientific knowledge map shows that conflicts related to honor and radical Islam are more prevalent in vulnerable residential areas. The minister vows to take firm action against instigators and those who uphold rigid values.
Young people in vulnerable residential areas are more exposed than others to extreme violence and social control based on ideology, standards of honor, and family reputation.
This is what a new scientific knowledge map prepared by Rambøll in cooperation with the National Centre for Combating Honor-Related Conflicts (MÆRK) and the Centre for Documentation and Intervention in Countering Extremism (CDE) shows.
The report documents that groups still exist living in closed environments characterized by social control and standards regarding what is considered the correct lifestyle. Minister for Immigration and Integration Morten Bodskov says these parallel societies must be dismantled.
«"Unfortunately, there are still immigrants in this country who live in parallel mental societies, turning their backs on fundamental Danish values such as equality and freedom. We will never accept that people be subjected to negative social control and that their freedom be restricted.".
Women and young people, in particular, are subjected to oppression and punishment for adopting Danish values. This applies, for example, to women who must meet very specific requirements in order to separate from their abusive husbands, and to young people who are subjected to violence and surveillance because of standards of honor and family reputation.
Immigration and Integration Minister Morten Bodskov says tough action must be taken against this, announcing intensified efforts to target those who incite and are responsible for establishing these parallel societies:
«The government will work to dismantle parallel mental societies. Therefore, we must pursue more rigorously those who contribute to the creation and maintenance of parallel societies. This requires all parties to take the problem seriously, and for the authorities to join forces and intensify their efforts to target extremists from all sides.».
Key findings of the scientific knowledge map regarding honor-related conflicts and extremism in vulnerable residential areas:
Young people in vulnerable residential areas are more susceptible than other young people to extremist violence and censorship based on ideology, standards of honor, and family reputation. This may be because honor-related conflicts and extremist environments find it easier to spread to areas suffering from social and economic vulnerability.
Socioeconomic vulnerability alone cannot explain the prevalence of honor-related conflicts and extremist environments in certain regions. It also involves the insularity of local communities, which makes it difficult for other perspectives to find a place.
Honor-related conflicts and extremism are formed and persist within interconnected groups and communities. Therefore, it's not simply a matter of a single family or the opinions of a single young person. Local relationships, norms, and social influence are all crucial. In honor-related conflicts, the family is often the primary actor. However, neighbors, friends, and religious leaders may also exert pressure, spread rumors, monitor, or support censorship.
