The Danish Ministry of Justice announced in a press release that it has provided the police with a digital tool, a new application to detect fraud or misuse of parking permits for people with disabilities, to enhance efforts to combat theft and misuse.
The new tool is also expected to be updated with new functions before the end of the year, so that the police can see more information about the cardholder and the parking permit.
.National Police Chief Lasse Boe expressed his pride that the police, in close cooperation with Danish disability organizations, have developed a solution to combat the fraud involving disability signs. He added: “From now on, our officers will be able to quickly verify the authenticity of these signs. Soon, with the click of a button, we will be able to find out, among other things, whether a sign has been reported stolen and access relevant information about its owner. This gives the police much better opportunities to detect and address cases of disability sign misuse.” The Danish National Police developed the new digital tool in collaboration with Danish disability organizations.
The app works by scanning the disabled parking card located on the car's windshield, allowing the police to verify the card's validity.
Using a disabled parking permit issued to someone else is subject, depending on the circumstances, to the provisions of Article 174 of the Danish Penal Code. If the permit is forged, the matter may fall under the provisions for forgery contained in Articles 171 and 172 of the Danish Penal Code.
Theft of a disabled parking card may, depending on the circumstances, be covered under Section 276 of the Danish Penal Code on theft, according to the statement.
