The new Danish government will enact a law allowing the deportation of people sentenced to at least one year in prison for aggravated violence or rape, as well as tightening the noose on people who do not have legal residency in Denmark, such as residents in deportation centers whose residency has been revoked or whose asylum applications have been rejected and who refuse to leave Denmark and return to their homelands. The bill also supports the voluntary return system.

In this regard, the Danish government issued a statement explaining that it would submit the bill today.

According to the new Minister for Immigration and Integration, Morten Bodskov: “There is no place in Denmark for foreigners who commit serious crimes such as aggravated violence and rape. Therefore, as a clear first step, we must expel foreign criminals who are sentenced to at least one year in prison without parole for committing these types of serious crimes. The Council of Europe recently adopted the Chisinau Declaration on the European Convention on Human Rights and Migration, which sends a clear message regarding the expulsion of criminal foreigners. In many cases, the Convention protects innocent people. It is high time we prioritized the well-being of Danes and the victims instead of focusing on the perpetrators.”

An electronic bracelet system will also be introduced for non-resident foreigners who repeatedly violate their regulatory obligations.

The bill also includes provisions for strengthening the voluntary return system. The statement from the source did not provide any details regarding the specifics of the new bill aimed at strengthening the voluntary return system.

The legal amendments are part of a deportation reform, which is outlined in the new Danish government's policy document.

The law is expected to come into effect on September 15, 2026, in less than two months.
