Copenhagen police have announced they are investigating an incident that occurred during a demonstration in the Danish capital on Saturday, after a video circulated online showing a verbal altercation between a man carrying the Danish flag and a woman opposed to the demonstration, which ended with the man spitting in her face.
A video leads police to open the case
The video circulating online shows a man carrying a Danish flag engaging in a discussion with a woman during a demonstration, before culminating in him spitting in her face. Copenhagen police told TV2 that they were unaware of the incident at the time it occurred, but became aware of it after the video went viral online. Police stated they have opened a case based on the video's content and are currently investigating the circumstances.
The man's identity is known to TV2
TV2 reported that they know the identity of the man who appears in the video, and that they have tried several times in recent days to contact him to get his comment on the incident, but they have not been able to speak with him until the time of preparing the report.
The demonstration brought together activists from both the right and the left.
The incident occurred during a demonstration held in Copenhagen on Saturday afternoon, which was attended by demonstrators representing two different directions on opposite ends of the political spectrum.
The demonstration itself witnessed several incidents that prompted police intervention. Police arrested three people during the events and used force to clear an unannounced demonstration after it caused the closure of Classensgade Street in Copenhagen.
The organizers of the demonstration disavowed the incident.
The demonstration was organized by the Danish People's Movement (Det danske folk), whose spokesman on Monday confirmed his rejection of a number of events that occurred during the demonstration.
The movement's spokesman, Cyrus Razavi, who is of Iranian origin, said that the movement supports Denmark remaining a "free, secular and safe country," according to what was reported by TV2.
Radawi confirmed that he had seen the video circulating and that he recognized the man appearing in it as one of the participants in Saturday's march.
Rizvi told TV2 that he believes the man "should not participate again," noting that one of the things the movement stressed before organizing the march was that it must be a "peaceful march.".
