Tourism in Denmark is nearing a new record; Copenhagen is leading the growth in hotel bookings.
Denmark continues to record a strong tourist season during the summer of 2026, as preliminary data indicates that the number of hotel bookings is heading towards breaking the record set last year, with Copenhagen and the Danish Triangle region (Trekantområdet) topping the list of the most attractive areas for visitors, according to TV2.
Copenhagen is becoming increasingly attractive to tourists
Peter Høgh Pedersen, CEO of Villa Copenhagen, told the source that the capital has become the “bold younger brother” compared to other Scandinavian capitals, noting a growing interest in experiencing the Scandinavian lifestyle.
He explained that most of the hotel's guests come from the United States and Germany, adding that the ease of access to Copenhagen, thanks to the proximity of the airport and the low cost of commuting by metro, makes it a preferred destination for visitors.
A historic hotel that attracts visitors
Villa Copenhagen opened in 2020 in the historic Danish Central Post Office building, constructed in 1912 and serving as the post office for decades before being converted into a luxurious five-star hotel. Featuring a rooftop pool, the hotel is now a top choice for tourists seeking a blend of historical charm and Scandinavian style.
Bookings are up across the country
Lars Ramme Nielsen, sector director at the Danish business organization Dansk Erhverv, confirmed that hotels sold 3.5 percent more rooms between July 1 and 21 than during the same period last year, which suggests a new record will be set when the final figures are released.
He added that the summer weather contributed to attracting tourists, but stressed that growth does not depend on the weather alone, but also on the quality of tourist experiences and good marketing, according to the source.
Copenhagen and the Trekantområdet region are in the lead
Hotel bookings in Copenhagen rose by 4.8 percent compared to last year, while the Danish Triangle region (Trekantområdet) recorded growth of 5.8 percent.
In contrast, bookings declined in the cities of Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg, although Aarhus had experienced exceptional activity in July 2025 thanks to hosting major international events.
The peak season isn't limited to hotels.
The data was based on 225 hotels reported by the Benchmarking Alliance platform and the Dansk Erhverv organization, while the Danish statistics agency Danmarks Statistik will release the official figures later.
The recovery is not limited to hotels, as both the holiday home rental association Feriehusdlejernes Brancheforening and the camping sector also expect to achieve a new record year, driven mainly by an increase in the number of tourists coming from abroad.
