According to TV2, the Moderates – the third largest party in parliament – believe that drug use should be decriminalized while the sale of drugs remains prohibited.
Newly elected Member of Parliament Nanna Gotfredsen told Berlingske that criminalizing drugs creates problems for some of the most vulnerable groups in society. That is why the Moderates want to decriminalize the possession of drugs for personal use. She added to the newspaper that this applies to all types of drugs, but stressed that the party believes it is still illegal to possess drugs for the purpose of reselling them.
Nana Gottfriedsen believes that criminalizing drug use has failed and that criminalization becomes a stigma, which means subjecting the stigmatized person to the radar of society and preventing their contribution to society, and involves the risks of contracting all kinds of diseases, amputation of arms and legs, overdoses, etc.
She also confirms that she does not believe that decriminalization is the ideal solution, but believes that the best solution is to ease the legislation, and the Moderate Party's program states that drug use should be decriminalized.
According to Nana Gottfriedsen, the penal system should be effective against acts that harm others rather than protecting people from themselves. She also refers to a 2019 United Nations report in which 12 UN agencies recommended the decriminalization of drugs for personal use. In general, Gottfriedsen believes that the public sector should not spend resources on people who are doing well and occasionally use drugs, as very few of them get into trouble. Instead, more effort is needed to help drug addicts and prevent drug use.
Nanna Gottfriedsen is a newly elected member of parliament for the Moderate Party. She is a lawyer and has been working with vulnerable people in society since 1999 at the Gadejuristen organization.
It is worth noting that in Denmark, drug use is not considered a direct crime, but rather the possession of drugs is, regardless of whether it is for personal use or for the purpose of selling them to others, according to the source.
