Ministry of Integration: The government will push more refugees and migrants into the labor market.

“More refugees and migrants must enter the Danish labor market,” is the goal of the Danish government, and on this basis, Immigration and Integration Minister Kær Dybvad Beek called for negotiations on the continuation and expansion of the so-called “Basic Integration Education” (Integrationsgrunduddannelse), abbreviated as igu.

The igu scheme targets refugees and reunited refugees aged between 18 and 40 who have had a civil registry address in Denmark for less than 10 years.

The IGU is a two-year employment relationship between a company and a refugee, encompassing paid training and education. It complements existing schemes such as internships, subsidies, and mentoring programs. The IGU has given many refugees access to Danish workplaces, but they need more. Therefore, as the document "Establishing the Government" indicates, the government will call for tripartite negotiations to continue and expand the scheme.

The IGU scheme was also high on the agenda when the Reform Commission issued a number of recommendations on May 23 of this year on how to help young people and adults in public care get closer to education or the labor market.

Immigration and Integration Minister Karel Deppvad-Beck states:

“The IGU scheme is an important initiative in Danish integration policy, and therefore I hope that we will now have the opportunity to continue and expand the scheme. I would like to see more refugees and migrants entering the workforce instead of receiving public assistance. It benefits themselves, their children, and Danish society. Now I look forward to a good dialogue with the trade union movement and employers.“.

Basic Inclusion Education (igu)

Basic integration education provides refugees with practical skills and experience in the Danish labor market. Basic integration education lasts for two years and combines paid internship work in a company with school education.
