Parliamentarians revoke support for the Independent Green Party (Frie Grønne) and the KD party with a new law, and Skander Siddiq comments.

According to TV2, Danish parliamentarians, with the exception of the Alternative party, have agreed on a new law that will make it more difficult for parties to receive state funding starting next year. The law will directly affect the Independent Green Party (Frie Grønne), led by Danish politician of Pakistani origin Sikandar Siddique, and another party, the Christian Democratic Party. Both parties were ousted from the Danish parliament after the last general election.

Under the current law, any party is entitled to financial party support if it receives 1,000 votes in the general election. However, parliamentarians changed the law today, and it will now require the equivalent of approximately 1,831,000 votes in the general election, or nearly 64,000 votes from the electorate, to obtain general party support. The only party that voted against the bill was the Alternative party. It is worth noting that this is the same party from which Skander Siddique and other parliamentarians broke away and together founded the Independent Green Party (Frie Grønne). They retained their parliamentary seats but under the new party name. With the last general election in November of last year, Frie Grønne failed to obtain the minimum percentage of votes from the electorate and thus the party was expelled from parliament. However, it receives party support, which allows its members to strengthen the party in preparation for the next parliamentary elections.

Financial support for both parties has ceased.

With the rules being changed to a minimum by parliamentarians today, neither the Independent Green Party (Frie Grønne) nor the Christian Democrats (KD) will be entitled to party support from next year.

According to TV2, the Free Green Party now receives annual support of 1,136,385 Danish kroner, while the Christian Democrats will lose support of 653,367 Danish kroner.

Iskandar Sadiq: “A dark day for democracy”

Sikandar Siddique, leader of the Frie Grønne party, described the decision as “a dark day for democracy,” saying that the parties in power had decided to remove support from the Frie Grønne party in order to increase support for their own parties, and that the parties in power were coalescing and strengthening the power around them.

It is worth noting that the Frie Grønne party has recently begun a new campaign to collect the necessary voter signatures that qualify them to enter the next general election.
