The Danish insurance company Alm. Brand has warned of the fire risks associated with lithium batteries used in everyday devices, such as mobile phones, electric bicycles and laptops, noting that damage to these batteries or their incorrect use could lead to serious fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New data obtained by the company from the Danish Emergency Management Agency Beredskabsstyrelsen revealed that fire and rescue teams responded to 127 fires in small products containing lithium batteries during 2025, and that nearly a quarter of these fires broke out while the batteries were being charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
22 fires recorded in waste due to products containing lithium batteries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The company also warned of the risks associated with improper disposal of used electronic devices and batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During 2025, fire and rescue teams responded to 22 fires in waste, in which a small product containing a lithium battery was considered the likely cause of the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Britta Bjerregaard explained that a used battery still poses a risk even after its expiry date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She said: \u00abEnd-of-use batteries still pose a fire hazard. If they are subjected to pressure or damage while being handled with waste, a short electrical short circuit may occur, leading to ignition.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She stressed the need to hand over batteries and devices containing built-in batteries in accordance with the instructions of the relevant municipality, emphasizing that they must never be disposed of as ordinary household waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Battery fires can develop very quickly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lithium batteries are found in many products used daily by residents of Denmark, but damage to them or improper handling can pose a significant risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Almbrandt does not have separate statistics on lithium battery fires, but confirms that it is aware of the problem through the damage cases it has dealt with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Britta Bjerregaard, the company's director of compensation and damages, said: \u00abLithium battery fires can develop very quickly and cause serious damage due to the flames and intense heat. Therefore, these risks must be taken seriously, even when it comes to the small products we use every day.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Electric bicycles top the list of products that cause fires<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Of the 127 fires recorded during 2025, 46 fires occurred in small personal vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Electric bicycles were the single product that most frequently called fire and rescue teams due to fires, with 27 fires linked to electric bicycles recorded during 2025, compared to 25 fires in the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The company explained that fires may arise as a result of the battery being damaged or overheating excessively, or due to the use of a charger not intended for the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Important guidelines to avoid battery fires during charging<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Britta Bjerregaard, director of the compensation and damages department at Almbrandt, called for adherence to a number of safety procedures when charging devices powered by lithium batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the statement, she said: \u00abAlways use the original charger that is suitable for the device, and make sure to charge the battery while you are near it and awake.
