Danish Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen today signed a cooperation agreement that strengthens maritime cooperation between Denmark and the United States. According to the Danish Foreign Ministry, this agreement will pave the way for the utilization of Danish expertise and solutions when the United States rebuilds its maritime industry in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of the areas that may come into effect under the new maritime cooperation agreement between Denmark and the United States of America are ship design, the sale of components to the shipbuilding industry, and the training of the maritime workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen stated: \u201cDenmark is an important maritime nation in the world, with prominent strategic positions in the maritime domain. Therefore, it is only natural that we sign an agreement today with the United States, paving the way for Danish expertise, solutions, and technologies to become an integral part of American maritime efforts. This agreement offers tremendous opportunities for Danish companies and will contribute to the creation of new jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today in Washington, D.C., the Secretary of State signed a cooperation agreement with Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, Jacob Helberg. The agreement outlines three areas of cooperation under the following headings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First Track: Education and Training
Track Two: Equipment, Technology and Services
Third track: Cooperation in defense industries and dual use<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US administration has declared its goal of strengthening Denmark\u2019s position as a leading shipbuilding nation. This requires cooperation with allies, including ensuring modern educational opportunities for marine engineers and ship designers. Danish institutions must contribute to achieving this goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The collaboration will also include the sale of Danish components, technology, and services to US shipyards and shipping companies. This could encompass engines, energy-efficient solutions, and specialized ship equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Denmark and the United States will also cooperate in the field of naval defense and dual-use products, which may include, for example, seabed monitoring and protection technologies, drones at sea, and improved oversight of maritime activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The collaboration will be on commercial terms, meaning that Danish companies, educational institutions, etc. will sell their expertise as consulting services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Danske Maritime CEO Jenny N. Pratt stated, \u201cWe view this agreement very positively, as it will open up new opportunities for Danish maritime companies. Denmark has outstanding maritime expertise, and its companies offer some of the world\u2019s leading maritime technologies and solutions. This cooperation agreement can enhance access to the US market and contribute to the employment of Danish expertise when the United States invests in rebuilding its maritime capabilities.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn average, Danish ships dock at US ports 17 times a day, and the historical cooperation between the United States and Denmark in the maritime field goes back a long way. In a divided world, cooperation agreements are an example of the opposite; they bring us closer together. We in Danish shipping companies support strengthening maritime cooperation with the United States.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fewer than 1% of the world\u2019s new commercial vessels are currently being built in the United States, while about 55% are being built in China, about 28% in South Korea, and about 13% in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
