The Copenhagen West Police Department confirmed the case via its Anklagerupdate service, according to DR.

Suspended prison sentences

The court sentenced the man to 60 days in prison, suspended, while the woman received a four-month suspended sentence. The court also convicted the woman of selling the cards, which led to a shop in Ringsted being defrauded.

The woman has filed an appeal against the ruling, while the man is still considering whether or not to appeal the ruling.

The cards will be returned to their original owner.

Authorities returned the Pokémon cards to the man who had originally reported them stolen, according to the public prosecutor's office.

The case comes at a time when the value of Pokémon cards has skyrocketed, making them an increasing target for people seeking to profit financially from stolen property.

The rising popularity of the cards attracts the attention of criminals.

In recent years, Pokémon cards have seen a significant increase in popularity and financial value, after some rare cards became collectibles that can fetch high prices.

The Japanese Pokémon franchise began in the 1990s as a video game, before expanding to include animation and other products, including a card collecting game that has become a global collectibles market.

Police warn against displaying valuables

The high value of some Pokémon cards has prompted Danish police to urge owners of valuable collectibles to be more careful, not only in how they store them, but also in how they display their value to others.

Kenneth Lund Jensen, deputy police inspector for South Zealand and Lolland-Falsters Police (Sydsjællands og Lolland-Falsters Politi), said in comments reported by DR that people should pay attention to the valuable things they keep, how they store them, and also how they disclose the size and value of their possessions.

Internet forums may reveal rare cards

Police indicate that criminals are able to monitor online forums and communities where card collectors exchange information and images related to their collections.

According to Kenneth Lund Jensen, as reported by DR, criminals can monitor these digital spaces and identify high-value cards, then target their owners or attempt to access and sell these cards in suitable markets.

The deputy police inspector said the high-value card could be treated much like a luxury watch, as a commodity that could be sold in appropriate markets.

From hobby to market, crime attracts attention

The case reveals another aspect of the Pokémon card market, which is no longer just a game or hobby for children and collectors, as some rare cards have become assets of great financial value.

As prices have risen, Danish police have begun to treat these cards as collectibles that may be targeted by crime, especially when their owners reveal online that they possess rare or high-value cards.

The new case comes amid growing interest from Danish police and authorities in the ways criminals can exploit the Pokémon card market to make profits or conceal the proceeds of criminal activities, a topic also covered by DR in a television report within the program Kriminelt.

A Danish court has sentenced a man from Griff and a woman from Herlev after convicting them of dealing in stolen Pokémon cards worth more than 132,000 Danish kroner.
