Pia Kjærsgaard of the Danish People's Party arrived at a National Court hearing Thursday morning to support former Immigration and Integration Minister Inger Støjberg. Kjærsgaard is the founder and former leader of the Danish People's Party, a right-wing party known for its hardline stance on immigration and asylum issues, a position also held by Støjberg.

Inger Støjberg retained her membership in the Danish parliament as an independent member after resigning from the Venstre Liberal Party when the party voted in favor of a national court case against her, following two decades in the Venstre Liberal Party.
The 2016 case of separating refugee couples and the court hearings
The court session (which may be the last) in the well-known case against Inger Stöberg concerning the separation of refugee couples if one of them was under 18 years old in 2016, while she was in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Integration, is being held this morning, Thursday.
The prosecution demanded an unconditional four-month prison sentence for Støjberg at Wednesday's hearing, asserting that if she is not held accountable, it will give the green light to ministers to do as they please. The defense, at Thursday's hearing, is demanding Støjberg's acquittal. The verdict is expected in early December.
A key aspect of the case is that Støjberg announced in a press release on February 10, 2016, that asylum couples would be separated if one of them was a minor. The press release did not mention any exceptions, and as a result, Inger Støjberg was accused of giving unlawful instructions regarding orders without exceptions.
